Hate: A Michigan State-Michigan History

This article is from 2011 but it was just re-posted on The Only Colors (an outstanding MSU blog) today. Heck Dorland did an excellent job of capturing much of what I know and feel about the University of Michigan and it’s fans. Give it a read, you will be glad you did.

Here is the LINK.

The Michigan State – Michigan game is a big deal for me, and for many Spartans. There are a lot of Wolverine fans that like to think that “it’s not a rivalry” and “it’s just another game“, but we all know that they really want to win this year so let’s not get caught up in that jive. Anyway, I’ve gone through the archives to pull a few links to posts that I’ve done about this rivalry and the game specifically. Pleased to enjoy…

Well, you get the picture. I’m nut-balls crazy about Michigan State and really don’t care one bit for the University of Michigan. When this week rolls around, I kind of go crazy. I think every Spartan goes a little crazy. It’s not just another game to me, I can tell you that much.

Remembering 2013.

This was a great, great, I mean really f-ing great game for the Spartans.

The pre-game quotes from Taylor Lewan and Fitz Toussaint taking the 2011 beat-down personally and how they were not going to be bullied again. Well, yeah, that.

Give the video a looksee and tell me you’re not pumped for Saturday at Spartan Stadium. BEAST!

The media seems to be hitting the “Michigan has nothing to lose / MSU has nothing to gain” angle which kind of makes sense, but is just a little to myopic. The Spartans will always want to beat the Wolverines. It doesn’t matter what the season storyline is. Winning the divisions doesn’t matter. Records don’t matter. Point spreads and over / under doesn’t matter. Head Coach or Athletic Director job security doesn’t matter. That is all noise and static. The Spartans will always want to beat the Wolverines. It’s just that simple.

The one thing MSU has to gain is another victory over Michigan. That is all that is important to these Spartans. 2008. 2009. 2010. 2011. 2013.

Spartans Open as 15-Point Favorite Over Wolverines.

Yes, it’s that week again. It comes around every year and in the Mark Dantonio era, it has become one of the best weeks of the year. Coach D is 5-2 in the series and that alone should qualify him for a lifetime contract with MSU. It’s so nice to see the Spartans dominating the series in recent years, in fact, it’s glorious.

This year, the Spartans are the favorite.

The line opened with MSU as a 15-point favorite, click HERE to read the article.

Typically, Vegas favors the Wolverines or at least give them the benefit of the doubt. Last year the Spartans were only favored by four points and we all know how that turned out. But this year, I think they see Michigan is down and struggling and MSU is looking tough although not completely dominant. I like the vote of confidence.

I’ve said it before, for this game, the records don’t matter, the point-spread doesn’t matter, nothing matters except who takes the field ready to do whatever it takes to win the game and take home Paul Bunyan. 2013 was a classic example as was 2011. That’s what I want to see on Saturday.

What is Going On at Michigan?

Shit is falling apart in Ann Arbor. You know how you know? All the Wolverine fanatics are real quiet. You can hear a pin drop. Let’s just look at the last week’s strange occurrences…

1411445410000-sp-umcoke2-09222314

Two tickets with the purchase of two bottles of Coke. WTF? That’s right, for about $3 you can get two tickets to the coveted and ballyhooed Big House to see the Wolverines battle the Gophers. Apparently Michigan is having big problems selling tickets for their B1G opener. Wow. The promotion was pulled to the embarrassment of the university which claimed there was a miscommunication, but still, wow. That’s a new low.

Coach Hoke is starting to crack. Brady is starting to answer interview questions with quips like “Hey, we don’t like it either” and “Because I said so”. That reminds me of the last days of RichRod. He even lashed out at his long-time friend and colleage Greg Mattisson on the sideline last week which got a lot of looks on ESPN. And now he can’t decide which not-great QB to start against the Gophers. My guess is they both “play” Saturday, at least as best they can.

Recruiting is starting to be effected. The commits seem to be pretty stable (at least for now), but the not-yet-committed guys guys are starting to question the teams playing and whether this staff will be in place by the time they get there. They didn’t score a TD against Notre Dame. They didn’t score a TD against Utah. Hell, they haven’t scored a TD against Michigan State since the first half of the 2011 game. Recruits should be thinking twice and keeping their options open.

Even God is hating on Michigan. That’s a lot of cold, hateful rain not to mention scary lightening and thunder. Folks were already leaving in droves before they evacuated the stadium, but how many of them came back? Maybe a few hundred. Maybe. That leaves about 114,800 empty seats. Ouch. It was sunny and nice for the Michigan State game. Just saying.

Summing up: The media has turned on Michigan, the fans have turned on Michigan, even God has turned on Michigan. Why? Because they do not win football games. When you’re whole deal is based on the notion of “we deserve respect because we’re Michigan; the leaders and the best”, well, that’s just sad. And the more distance Michigan puts between were they are now and the good old days, well, the more sad it gets.

Just keep singing that fight song Michigan, and remembering the way it once was so long ago. Hail.

Hail to the Felons, Part #2.

I’m really surprised this story has not garnered more coverage than it has. You have a major university which believes it is superior to it’s B1G brethren scholastically, athletically, hell, even morally. Then you have a scholarship athlete that allegedly rapes a fellow student-athlete in 2009 only to be expelled for the incident in five years later.

Brendan Gibbons, you are one lucky sombitch.

This thing went on so long it spans two coaches. Why did it take five years to decide Gibbons had 50.1% committed rape on a fellow student? Well, let’s see… how may years of eligibility does a NCAA football player get? Even sites like MGoBlog are embarrassed and outraged by the handling of this crime.

Why did Coach Hoke cover for him citing “family issues” when he was aware that his player was being expelled? That’s what he did on Dec. 23 prior  to Michigan’s bowl beat-down at the hands of Kansas State. I like Hoke (not as much as I loved RichRod) but a simple “no comment” would have sufficed instead of telling a lie to the media on a subject that would become public record anyway.

And to add even another layer of dung to this dagwood of a shit sandwich, Gibbons’ roommate, Taylor Lewan, was also caught up in the mess. Lewan allegedly threatened the alleged victim saying if she presses charges, Lewan would rape her. What?!? And for this he received a short note officially informing him that he shouldn’t do that anymore.

Old #34 and #77 just being classic Michigan Men. Quality gentlemen, dutiful scholars and honorable contributors to the lore that is the University of Michigan.

There are some links below to give you more detail and understanding on what happened, but let me assure you that I have not overstated the situation. This is bad and if it happened at Michigan State, I would be ashamed and saddened. Michigan fans like to call Spartan athletes thugs and criminals, and that’s fine. We’ve had our issues just as every university has issues. But between Lewan and his pending court date and Gibbons and his expulsion one game short of eligibility running out, I think you might just want to hold you maize and blue tongue.
